Read the interview by character Sapphire from the book LESSONS ON SEDUCTION  by Estelle Pettersen.

Introduce yourself by telling us a little about your background.

My name is Sapphire Audrey Blake. My friends call me Saph. I come from an upper-middle-class family who moved to the coastal city of Lester Harbor when I was in junior high school. My father, David, is a council member of Northern Lakes Baptist Church. I come from a strict upbringing; my brother, Roland, and I weren’t shown a lot of affection growing up. I felt confined for most of my life until I met my best friend, Vera, who taught me that it was okay to be bold, to have a strong voice, and to be myself. I don’t bend to the rules of conformity anymore.

81e1DoylWeL.SR160,240_BG243,243,243Do you have any annoying habits, quirks, strange mannerisms, or other defining characteristics?

I tend to be late, which annoys my partner, Julian, because he has a tendency of being early; he considers being on time to be bordering being late! He’s a health nut, so he finds it amusing that I eat junk food for dinner sometimes. I’m also messy and Julian is a neat freak. Still, we manage to balance each other.

What colour is your hair/eyes?

My hair is originally chestnut brown, although I did lighten it at one point, and my eyes are blue, the color of the sapphire gemstone, like my name.

What are your likes/dislikes?

I love music—Julian plays some great songs on the piano for me; I also love books and dancing in the summer rain. I don’t like gossip, Mondays, or exams.

81e1DoylWeL.SR160,240_BG243,243,243Why do you hate/love character A or B? Are you going to avenge yourself of them? Make friends with them? Why do they make you feel like you do?

I love my partner, Julian, and I would do whatever it takes to protect him from people who try to hurt him. His ex-lover, Saira Quinn, is a ruthless business entrepreneur who keeps popping up in our lives, to the point where Julian feels personally threatened. If she ever tries to hurt him, I’ll take action, with the help of Julian’s sister Vera, who happens to be my friend, and her partner, Alistair, an influential man with connections to the police.

Do you have a job/hobby?

I worked part-time in the library during my college years and eventually found graduate work at a senator’s office.

Are you in love?

Yes, I am in love with my partner, Julian Richland, an archaeology professor at Montville State University.

Are you a virgin? When/how did you lose it?

I was a virgin when I met Julian. I lost my virginity to him on Christmas Day. Julian is my significant other. He’s also the most important person in my life.

Are you close to your family? How did/do you get along with family members?

I’m not close to my family due to the circumstances involving my father and Julian. I learned to forgive Julian for the emotional pain he caused, although that took time. However, my father continues to live a double life, and my family has shut me out for speaking up and being honest. They don’t approve of Julian and refuse to talk to me for as long as I’m with him. Sadly, their disapproval will probably never change.

What pain did Julian? Why does your father hate him?

Yes, Julian is my partner. When we first started dating, it wasn’t a serious relationship, and I didn’t know him very well. Julian and my father have been acquainted before – it’s a long and sad story. I also found out Julian was a professional lover who sold his body to the woman I loathe most – Saira Quinn. To put it lightly, he broke my heart when I learned the truth.

81e1DoylWeL.SR160,240_BG243,243,243Describe any influences in your past that led you to do the things you do/or have done today.

My friend, Vera, is my greatest influence. She doesn’t care what people think of her, she’s successful in her career, and she’s an extremely easy-going person – there’s always a bit of mischief but never unnecessary drama with her. I met Julian through Vera—she initially warned me that Julian wouldn’t be good for me, but he and I had other plans.

Do you have a secret?

I’m pansexual, but that’s not a secret anymore. Gender or gender identity isn’t a determining factor to my sexual and emotional attraction toward people. I’m also a voyeur and I like to be dominant in the bedroom. These are a few things I experienced with Julian’s guidance, who taught me lessons on BDSM and role play.

When did you discover you were pansexual? And what will that mean with your relationship with Julian?

I’ve always been attracted to people regardless of gender from as long as I remember. When I was about six or seven, I saw a television show with a beautiful woman; I was attracted to the woman for many reasons – her mannerisms, the way she spoke, her natural beauty – and it felt right. I come from a very strict and traditional family, so they never would have accepted me, but Julian loves me as I am. I wouldn’t be with him if he wasn’t open-minded. These days, he and I are in a monogamous relationship; he gives me more than enough love, and I’m not really looking to be with anyone else.

If you wanted to kill someone, how would you do it?

I would ask Vera if her partner, Alistair Scott, could help me. He’s a powerful and wealthy man with connections, where money can buy secrets. The thought of killing Saira crossed my mind for the pain she put Julian through. However, I’m not a psychopath or a murderous woman; I would feel the heavy weight of guilt if I ever killed anyone.

81e1DoylWeL.SR160,240_BG243,243,243Are you happy now your story has been told? Is there more to come?

I’m happy that my story has been told. I think Julian’s sister, Vera, has a story of her own that she wants to tell. She’s been through some shocking situations, including being a victim of physical abuse in a previous relationship before she met her current partner, Alistair. She is a true survivor, a warrior.

Thank you Saph, I can’t wait to read your story!

  1. Great blog!
Interesting that you gave away the double life with Sapphire’s father. That was a brilliant piece of the story. Loved it.

  2. I love reading character interviews. It sounds like Sapphire is smitten with Julian. I have this book on my Kindle and look forward to reading it. Going on vacay in September, so that may be my chance.
